Science Expo Winners' Update

Who would have thought that colour-coated candy could lead to greatness? Well, it was not the candy itself but the scientific minds behind the idea of using the humble, round multi-coloured candy-coated chocolate buttons!

Basisipho Jack and Nthabiseng Ntshomise, both Grade 10 Physical Science learners at OWLAG, started their competitive journey at the Eskom Regional Competition where they were awarded a silver medal for their investigative project. They were chosen to participate in the 2nd round regional finals, after which they were selected to represent Gauteng at national level, where they received a bronze medal.

Basisipho said, “When we participated in the SASOL Expo we were voted Best Newcomer School; Best Overall Project in Food Sciences; and Best Project from Grades 7-9.”

“After that we got a call saying that we were chosen for the interview to take part in an International Science Expo,” Nthabiseng added.

At the OWLAG School Expo they also received recognition and won 1st prize as well as Most Outstanding Project.

Their project, “Human Brain Attraction to Colourful Foods”, attempted to identify what colours the human brain is attracted to. When asked what inspired their investigation they said that they first brainstormed many ideas - some of which they thought were stupid – like whether eating certain colours of food has an effect on the undigested product. When they finally came up with their idea of asking people what colour candy they were most attracted to, they were never discouraged just because others judged the concept. They simply didn’t care and persisted!

Both Basisipho and Nthabiseng would like to encourage young scientists to believe in themselves and their ideas, and also to demystify a perception that some may have of the subject.

”There is science behind every little thing; it is not the way some people see it – science can actually be a lot of fun!”

OWLAG Students Excel in Trinity/Guildhall Music Exams

Congratulations to all 68 students who passed (>60%) their Trinity/Guildhall or Trinity/Rock School Music Exam in 2010. Among these were 35 Distinctions (>87%) and 20 Merits (>75%). Nosipho Khumalo, Noxolo Ntintili, Dominique Tarr and Avukile Zoya also share the highest mark (99%) in a Grade 1 examination for the entire Johannesburg area during the October examination session!

This is the second successive year that the Academy has entered candidates for these exams. Not only have we seen a 55% year on year increase in the number of entries, but the average percentage obtained has also increased from 83% in 2009 to 86% in 2010. The exams (all between Grade 1 and 5) represented a wide selection of instruments, namely: piano, guitar, voice, violin, viola, cello, double bass, clarinet, saxophone and trumpet. Similar growth is projected for 2011 when the range of instruments will be extended to include flute, oboe, bassoon, trombone and French horn.

HAVE YOU EVER?

Have you ever heard the sound of people
jumping into a cold pool?
A whale smacking the ocean with its tail.

Have you ever seen boiling water
in a pot on an open fire?
A spluttering volcano.

Have you ever pricked a sunny-side-up egg
with your fork?
Lava erupting from a crater.

Have you ever?

BE SPECIFIC

Don’t say, she’s beautiful,
Say you saw her pure skin,
Her mesmerizing green eyes,
Her curvy shape,
Swaying from side to side
As she glided across the room.

Don’t say you liked the way she laughed,
Say her laugh was like a gurgling stream,
A twittering bird on a Sunday morning,
Singing Gospel and inviting you
To the wonders of a new day.

Don’t say her perfume was nice,
Say her fragrance was sweet
Like the scent of a perfect rose.

Don’t say you felt something,
Say you felt an electric connection.
Your blood bubbled and boiled,
Your face glowed
When she gazed at you.

Don’t say she greeted you,
Say her velvet voice,
Touched your inner being.
And then you knew,
She was unique.
The only one,
For you.

BE SPECIFIC

Don’t say you saw a dog;
Say you saw a husky, a poodle, or a golden retriever.
Don’t tell me he was running,
Tell me he sprinted, jumped, or vaulted up in the air, as he caught the frisbee.

Don’t tell me the air around the park smelled wonderful;
Say the air was filled with the fresh smell of soil, just after it has rained;
Or the aroma of a mouth-watering hot-dogs,
wafted across the park.

Don’t say the children were happy;
Tell me that they were cheering,
hopping, and skipping with excitement,
as the sprinklers sprayed a mist over their beaming faces.

Don’t say the food was delicious;
Say the fresh bread was like a marshmallow,
the lettuce was crispy and crunchy.
Don’t tell me the ice-cream was refreshing;
Say that it revived your energy,
even though it sent an electric shock through your body.

Don’t just write your words;
Select them carefully,
Make them work together.
Let them test your imagination;
And let them create images
that will last FOREVERI

I AM

Who am I?
I am a teenager
Stuck in a world of adults
That expect
So much of me.

I am all that I hear,
Grunge music blasting through
Headphones
Of a troubled and angry
Adolescent.

I am all that I see,
A child,
Trying to live a life,
Without a mom...
Day in and day out,
Waiting,
For the woman
To reappear and actually maybe
Just maybe care…

I am all that I taste,
Salty tears spilling down
My always composed face
Faking a smile
To hold myself together.

I am a doe,
Quiet as I get along,
And do my thing.
Gentle as I think
Of what to say.

This is my reflection
Of who,
I am.

BE SPECIFIC

Don’t say that the room was bright;
Say that it was lit up by the golden light of the sun,
And that yellow joy bounced off the walls and lifted your heart,
Or that the sun’s rays were a fine work of art.

Don’t say that you heard the wind;
Say that you heard its sorrowful cries
Tapping at your window,
Begging to come in,
Or it was a quiet breeze that brought peace from within.

Don’t say that the water was cool;
Say that you floated in its calming sensation
As the waves licked at your face and tickled your toes,
It seemed to know
The direction, the emotions of your heart flow.

Don’t say the bread was delicious;
Say that its outer crust was crispy and warm as it entered your mouth,
Then you crunched your way to its puffy core,
Or its sweet savoury taste left you wanting more.

Don’t say the earth’s smell was refreshing,
Be specific;
Say that the damp, earthy smell after the rain
Gently caressed your nose as you breathed in its purity ,
And your body tingled,
As you and nature rekindled your oneness.

Don’t say that you appreciate your senses,
Say that they are the energy that lights up your inner fire;
They are the beauties,
That fulfil your inner desires.

LOOKING THROUGH ANOTHER'S EYES

Looking through another’s eyes,
I see shattered glass.
The pieces of another’s life...
Blown apart, because of skin colour.

Looking through another’s eyes,
I see pain and suffering.
All horrid fears, that have not been expressed,
Because you’re holding back your tears.

Looking through another’s eyes,
I see a wish,
To stop violence,
And to delete silence

Looking through my eyes,
You’ll see a dream,
For us to stand as a team,
And prejudice nowhere to be seen.

So have you ever tried,
Looking through another’s eyes?

MOM

You are...
A shower,
Caressing me with love and happiness,
When I’m troubled.

You are...
A blanket,
Embracing me with hugs and kisses,
When I’m sad.

You are
A counsellor,
Giving me advice and strength,
When I’m confused.

You are...
A cup of hot chocolate,
Filling me with warmth and soothing me,
When I’m tearful.

You are...
A kangaroo,
Protecting and keeping me safe
In your cozy pouch.
