Science Expo
Winners'
Update |
Who would
have thought
that
colour-coated
candy could
lead to
greatness?
Well, it was
not the
candy itself
but the
scientific
minds behind
the idea of
using the
humble,
round
multi-coloured
candy-coated
chocolate
buttons!
Basisipho
Jack and
Nthabiseng
Ntshomise,
both Grade
10 Physical
Science
learners at
OWLAG,
started
their
competitive
journey at
the Eskom
Regional
Competition
where they
were awarded
a silver
medal for
their
investigative
project.
They were
chosen to
participate
in the 2nd
round
regional
finals,
after which
they were
selected to
represent
Gauteng at
national
level, where
they
received a
bronze
medal.
Basisipho
said, “When
we
participated
in the SASOL
Expo we were
voted Best
Newcomer
School; Best
Overall
Project in
Food
Sciences;
and Best
Project from
Grades 7-9.”
“After that
we got a
call saying
that we were
chosen for
the
interview to
take part in
an
International
Science
Expo,”
Nthabiseng
added.
At the OWLAG
School Expo
they also
received
recognition
and won 1st
prize as
well as Most
Outstanding
Project.
Their
project,
“Human Brain
Attraction
to Colourful
Foods”,
attempted to
identify
what colours
the human
brain is
attracted
to. When
asked what
inspired
their
investigation
they said
that they
first
brainstormed
many ideas -
some of
which they
thought were
stupid –
like whether
eating
certain
colours of
food has an
effect on
the
undigested
product.
When they
finally came
up with
their idea
of asking
people what
colour candy
they were
most
attracted
to, they
were never
discouraged
just because
others
judged the
concept.
They simply
didn’t care
and
persisted!
Both
Basisipho
and
Nthabiseng
would like
to encourage
young
scientists
to believe
in
themselves
and their
ideas, and
also to
demystify a
perception
that some
may have of
the subject.
”There is
science
behind every
little
thing; it is
not the way
some people
see it –
science can
actually be
a lot of
fun!”

examination
for the
entire
Johannesburg
area during
the October
examination
session!
This is the
second
successive
year that
the Academy
has entered
candidates
for these
exams. Not
only have we
seen a 55%
year on year
increase in
the number
of entries,
but the
average
percentage
obtained has
also
increased
from 83% in
2009 to 86%
in 2010. The
exams (all
between
Grade 1 and
5)
represented
a wide
selection of
instruments,
namely:
piano,
guitar,
voice,
violin,
viola,
cello,
double bass,
clarinet,
saxophone
and trumpet.
Similar
growth is
projected
for 2011
when the
range of
instruments
will be
extended to
include
flute, oboe,
bassoon,
trombone and
French horn.
