Students enrolled in the Economics course are continuously challenged to apply their extensive classroom knowledge to what is happening in both their immediate community and internationally. Students visit various commercial and industrial hubs, including:

The Johannesburg Produce Market, to gain first-hand experience of the influences of supply and demand on the market.
The Kimberly Diamond fields, to gain an understanding of how the South African economy has developed over the past hundred years.

Students are encouraged to develop their critical and analytical skills by actively  participating in the country’s developmental and social challenges. This is achieved by, for example, sending their constructive suggestions to the Minister of Finance with regards to the budget speech.

The course is extended beyond the current syllabus to allow students to gain an informed understanding of economics, commerce and the workings of the economy. This is achieved by encouraging students to see issues within a  broader context and by incorporating other academic disciplines such as Commercial Law and Economic History. Students also develop life skills which include: planning for the future; creating their own employment; working both independently and as part of a team and formulating arguments logically.
